Custom Deck Builder in North Atlanta
Composite and Trex decks designed for the way you actually use your backyard. Built to code, built by one local crew, and backed by a Trex Pro Partner.
Decks, built by one local crew
A deck is the fastest way to add real living space to a North Atlanta home. Since 2008, Sands Construction Group has built decks across Gwinnett, Forsyth, Hall and North Fulton: ground-level platforms, raised decks with stairs, multi-level decks that step down to a pool, and full replacements of tired wood decks.
Most of our deck work today is composite. As a Trex Pro Partner we build with Trex boards and railing day in and day out, so you get a deck that keeps its color, never needs staining, and comes with Trex's limited residential warranty. If you'd rather build in wood, see our wood decks and steps page.
What we build
- Composite decks (Trex) with picture-frame borders and hidden fasteners
- Multi-level and pool decks, including decks that wrap a pool or a hot tub
- Deck replacement: new composite boards on a reinforced or rebuilt frame
- Black aluminum, cable and composite railing systems
- Stairs, landings and built-in benches
- Low-voltage post, step and rail lighting
- Roofs, screens and fireplaces added to a new deck (see porches and fireplaces)

How we build it
Footings and framing
Every deck starts with footings sized for your soil and the load of the deck, a ledger that is flashed and bolted to the house (never just nailed), and joists spaced for the board you choose. Composite boards need tighter joist spacing than wood, and we frame for it.
Boards and borders
We lay boards with a picture-frame border, hidden fasteners where the board allows it, and expansion gaps that match the manufacturer's spec, so the deck looks finished and stays flat through Georgia summers.
Railings, stairs and lighting
Railing height, baluster spacing and stair rise are all code items the inspector will check. We build them right the first time, and we can run low-voltage lighting through posts and steps while the deck is open.
Permits, HOA and inspections
A new or replaced deck needs a building permit in every county we serve, and most subdivisions need HOA approval first. We prepare the drawings, submit both, and meet the inspector for the footing and final inspections.
Decks questions
In Gwinnett, Forsyth, Hall and North Fulton, an attached or raised deck needs a building permit from your county or city, and the inspector checks footings, framing and railings. Small freestanding platforms under 30 inches can be exempt under the state code, but most real decks are not. We handle the permit and the inspections as part of the job.
Composite costs more up front and almost nothing in upkeep: no staining, no sealing, no splinters, and the color holds. Pressure-treated wood costs less to build and needs sealing or staining every few years to look its best. We build both and will show you samples of each at the estimate.
Often, yes. If the frame is sound we can reinforce the joists and lay new composite boards and railing on it. If the footings or ledger are failing, we'll tell you, and we'll rebuild the frame rather than put new boards on a bad structure.
Yes. Pool decks, two-level decks that step down to the pool, and decks with a covered porch over the pool are some of our most photographed projects. Take a look at the Flowery Branch, Norcross and Dacula pool projects on our home page.
Trex backs its boards with a limited residential warranty of 25 to 50 years depending on the line. The frame underneath is pressure-treated lumber built to code, and with proper flashing and footings it is built to last as long as the boards.
